The current electric bicycles in mainland China are mainly lead-acid batteries. Lithium-electric bicycles are electric bicycles that use lithium-ion large-capacity batteries. Because lithium batteries are light and durable, electric bicycles are not bulky and beautiful, and are suitable for the elderly and women. But the price will be higher than the lead-acid electric bicycle.
In recent years, the output of lithium-ion bicycles in China has generally shown an upward trend. In the first half of 2014, the shipment of lithium-ion bicycles in mainland China reached 1.7 million units, a 36% increase over the same period in 2013. The growth in shipments of lithium-ion bicycles is mainly due to the growth in demand in the mainland domestic market, and the growth rate of the export market is relatively small. In the next three years, the growth rate of mainland lithium battery bicycle shipments will maintain a compound growth rate of around 40%, and shipments will reach 8 million units by 2016.
The production of lithium battery bicycles in mainland China is mainly concentrated in the four major sectors of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Tianjin and Guangdong. In the north, the enterprises represented by the Tianjin plate produce simple models, while the enterprises represented by the Jiangsu-Zhejiang plate in the south mainly produce luxury models. Among these regions, Tianjin is the largest lithium-electric bicycle production base in the mainland. According to the High-Tech Lithium-Ion Research Institute, Tianjin accounted for 35% of lithium-ion bicycle production; followed by Jiangsu with 24%, Zhejiang with 17%, and Guangdong with 10%, and the four regions together accounted for 86% of the market.
